SOAP MAKING 101
making soap is SO MUCH FUN! but it requires great care, and safety.
working with LYE is dangerous buisiness, so please wear eye goggles, and a good pair of gloves.

*WITCH SOAP RECIPE:

~YOU WILL NEED:
*a 13 oz. can of LYE
*4 Lbs. LARD
*5 cups COLD WATER
*1 TBPS. PATCHOULI OIL
*1 TBSP. LAVENDAR OIL
*1 cup STRAWBERRY JUICE (fresh)
*1/4 c. soap bark herb (optional)

->in a LARGE stainless steel pot (or
enamel, iron, NOT METAL!) melt lard over low heat
->In a seperate pot mix the lye and water
->heat lard until bubbles appear, but
do not boil! remove from heat
->add LYE
->with wooden spoon stir in lavendar,
patchouli, juice and soap bark.
->simmer off of heat for 30 min.STIR!
->pour into 2 inch deep greased pan and allow
to cool over night.
->cup soap into squares and leave in pan
for 3 days. (make sure it is well ventalated)
->place bars on waxed paper and allow to age
in a draft free place for 4-6 weeks.
(it is important to leave it for that long..
if the lye doesn't settle into the soap, you
risk burning and aggrivating the skin.)

CANDLE MAKING
the easiest recipe for candle
making that i've tried is this:

*gather any old candles, crayons,
or beeswax.
*melt over a double burner
*have prepared: a pencil or stick with
the "wick" (or string) tied in the
middle.
*you can either pour the wax into a
mold and rest the wick over the
jar.
OR
*you can dip the pencil/wick into the
wax until it creates a tapered candle.

HOW TO MAKE BEADED CURTAINS: (from "living on the earth" by alicia bay laurel)

~make a soupy paste of flour and water
~take a long string and tack it so it is horizontal
~dip strings of newspaper in the "soup" and wind
them around the string at intervals
~form a row of beads
~when dry, paint and finish with shallac or WOOD finish.

MAKE YOUR OWN CLEANERS
to make an all purpose cleaner:
*mix 1/2 water
*1/2 vinegar
*orange or lemon essential oil
(to scent) in an old spray bottle.
~this can be used for windows,
grease, floors, counter tops...pretty
much anything!!

*** Make an apple headed doll, she'll be ready to turn into a crone for Halloween! ***

Peel an apple, and cut out the core from the top to the bottom. Carve into it some features: depressions for eyes, a groove linking eyes and nose, laugh lines and a slash for the mouth. Place the apple in some water mixed with lemon juice to delay browning as you carve. The apple will shrink by two thirds over the next two to three weeks as you leave it to dry out. Loop a very long piece (3-4 yards) of raw looking homespun gray wool yarn into a ten inch long hank, and tie with a piece of yarn in the middle. At this tie, glue the bunch of wool into the top of the apple head and arrange this hair. As if wrapping a package, glue some country-style calico cotton fabric around a plastic, soda necked-bottle, leaving fabric three inches longer at top and bottom. Tuck and glue under the bottom and glue top fabric into bottle opening. Fold a ten inch square of country-style fabric diagonally, and tie this over apple granny's shoulders. Draw in eyes, cheeks and lips with watercolor paints or water-based markers. Glue the apple head onto the bottle neck, poking a dowel or pencil through if needed, and setting into bottle. Continue to decorate this apple doll as a witch or granny with a cape, kerchief on her head, braided hair, small gathered magic bags hanging from her belt, a hat, an apron, a bunch of sticks tied to her back, etc.

**Leaf Printing**

Collect a variety of fresh leaves
Acrylic paints
Paint brushes
Paper
Rolling pin

Begin by carefully painting the preferred side of a fresh leaf and place on the paper. Cover the leaf with another piece of paper and roll over it with the rolling pin to make the print. Be sure not to move the sheets of paper as this will ruin the print. If you find your sheets are slipping, weigh down the edges.

Gently peel back the top sheet and lift the leaf very carefully.Set the painted paper aside to dry. Some leaves may be used more than once.

This is an easy and attractive method of creating your own designs for stationery or homemade wrapping paper.
